Nabil, what an excellent article. I found it fascinating reading about your Greek Catholic ancestor Jirjis Mishaqa’s efforts to build a mosque for Muslims with his very own funds. You’re very right that maintaining a secular society where people are free to practice their faith (or choose not to have any faith) should be our goal. The opposition of the building of the Islamic community center a couple of blocks from Ground Zero is misguided and based on discrimination and ignorance. To blame a whole faith on the murderous acts of a group of extremist terrorists is nonsense, plain and simple!!

This is a very interesting article, Nabil. Sometimes, a story such as that of Jirjis Mishaqa tells more than a long analysis.
I completely agree with your idea that “the Christians of the Middle East are well positioned to bridge the growing gap between the west and Islam.” I would even go further and say that the Christians of the Middle East ARE the real interfaith dialogue. They practice it every day without necessarily being aware of this. It is time for us Christians (or born-Christian agnostics and atheists) to speak up, to make our narrative heard, and to contribute to making the “West” (a term to be taken as an utter simplification) realise that not from another planet and shouldn’t be viewed only through the prism of their religion.
